Getting there from the US
There is no nonstop from the US to Phuket (HKT). The usual pattern is one connection in Asia or the Gulf:
- West Coast: KAYAK data for LAX to HKT shows Hong Kong as the most booked connection (53% of one-stop round trips), then Singapore (29%) and Seoul Incheon (15%); the quickest one-stop itineraries take about 21.5 hours. From SFO, Hong Kong carries 60% of one-stop bookings and Singapore 27%.
- East Coast: from New York the fastest one-stop options run about 21 hours, typically via Abu Dhabi, with Hong Kong and Incheon also common.
Fares move a lot. At the time of writing KAYAK showed round trips from SFO averaging about $919 over the past year (typical range $794 to $1,180) and November as the cheapest month from LAX at around $759. Treat these as a guide, not a quote.
Entry rules for US citizens
Thailand changed its rules in September 2026. From 15 September 2026, US citizens can stay visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, down from the 60 days allowed since July 2024; the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington lists the new 30-day rule. One extension of up to 30 days is possible at an immigration office, at the officer's discretion. If you want a longer first stay, the Thai e-Visa is applied for before departure.
Every foreign arrival also completes the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before landing, at tdac.immigration.go.th only; paid look-alike sites exist. Rules have changed twice in two years, so check the embassy page again before you fly.
Time zone and jet lag
Thailand runs on UTC+7 all year with no daylight saving. In the November to March season, when US clocks are on standard time, Phuket is 12 hours ahead of New York and 15 hours ahead of Los Angeles. Flying west, you tend to wake early, which suits a 6 am tee time; still, keep day one free and play from day two.
Best months
December to March is the dry core: 35 mm of rain in January against 325 mm in September. November is the shoulder, with 195 mm over about 14 days, wetter early in the month. What it costs
Figures below are per person, for a couple sharing a room, 7 nights and 4 rounds. No Phuket club has published 2026/27 high-season rates yet, so green fees use the latest official or agent rates and will likely be higher from 1 November.
- Flights: about $760 to $1,180 round trip (KAYAK averages and ranges above).
- Green fee, caddie, cart: Red Mountain 4,600 THB all-in at the agent low-season rate (about $138); Laguna Golf Phuket 5,600 THB with caddie at its official year-round rate, plus 700 THB for a single cart (about $189).
- Caddie tip: 400 to 500 THB per round in cash (about $12 to $15). Caddies are compulsory in Thailand.
- Four rounds with tips: roughly 20,000 to 27,200 THB, about $600 to $815.
- Hotel: Homm Suites Laguna, a golf-view suite with breakfast, was 5,969 THB a night non-refundable on Booking.com for 15 to 22 November 2026; for a couple that is about $625 each for the week. A Banyan Tree pool villa for the same dates was 26,057 THB a night (about $780).
A self-arranged week in a mid-range golf hotel therefore lands around $2,000 to $2,600 per person before meals and transfers. More on how fees are built: golf prices in Thailand.
A sample week on real courses
- Day 1: land at HKT. Laguna hotels are about 25 minutes away.
- Day 2: Laguna Golf Phuket, 5 minutes from the Laguna hotels. Par 71, redesigned by Paul Jansen in 2013 to 2015 with the bunker count cut from 100 to 37. A forgiving first round.
- Day 3: rest, beach, range session.
- Day 4: Blue Canyon, Canyon Course, 20 minutes from the airport. Three-time Johnnie Walker Classic venue; Tiger Woods won there in 1998.
- Day 5: Red Mountain, the island's highest course, on an old tin mine. New back-nine holes are being finished, with the full layout expected in January 2027.
- Day 6: spare day for weather, or Blue Canyon's Lakes Course.
- Day 7: Aquella in Phang Nga, about 45 minutes north of the airport, opened 2021, with a par-3 11th over the Andaman Sea.
- Day 8: fly home.
